EBS Mouzinho da Silveira is located in Archipelago of Azores, in Corvo Island, the most peripheral region of Portugal and the Europe as well. Corvo has a geographical area of seventeen square kilometers and a population of about 450 inhabitants. Corvo island is a Biosphere Reserve with bird watching, lagoons, lovely water and windmills. In small society the school institution has a
considerable importance. School is located in a poor social and economic area and pupils don’t have many contacts with the exterior world. They need to compare their culture to other European cultures, share experiences with other pupils and be in contact with the European diversity. Though we are very small community, our eyes are on Europe and on its policies. School has 42 students and 20 teachers, which makes us lucky to benefit from a very individual teaching. We also have students with special needs and we expect these children to take part in all activities and to contribute to the experience in partnership and long-distance cooperation. Whole staff is very motivated to begin a new partnership. Headmistress with teachers in project team will be responsible of the school’s project but there are many others prepared to step up in case needed. Since 2004 we have
developed 4 successful Comenius projects. We are also a host school for Erasmus Placements in Schools and we have already received 6 students from several European countries. In 2012 we finished a Comenius project and the quality of this partnership was so high that we were considered a “Star project” (“European shared Treasure”: http://www.europeansharedtreasure.eu/detail.php?id_project_base=2010-1-IT2-COM06-14410) Our school wants to take part to European cooperation activities because of the isolated location need platforms on the Internet where pupils and teachers can share their thoughts and be in contact with other pupils and teacher all around the Europe. This project will be integrated into the curriculum activities to promote new strategies of learning, specially learning by doing. With this project school wants to identify and disseminate effective practices related with health and well-being. One of the most accurate motivation to join in this project is to learn and know how other schools organize the school meals. Portuguese education documents says that “children's diet is conditioned by the family, the school and the community in which they live. School lunches should be an opportunity to provide the essential nutrients and allow the development of a healthy, varied and balanced diet." At this time our school is the only school in Portugal that doesn’t have school canteen serving lunch. With this project we want to change this by showing to our governors that the school meals are pupils’ right and also that healthy meal is very important for their well-being and learning process.
